Quick Pick(s)

Brief transmission tonight as it's late(ish) when I write this and I'm in serious need of sleep.  All this traveling about and working appears to have finally caught up with me and I've begun to realize that waking up at 8 a.m. for unnecessary reasons is a lousy way to be.  Anyhow, I just started reading a book called Perdido Street Station by China Mieville and if you enjoy Science Fiction and Steampunk, well, you need to read this book.  I'm not terribly far in, not even at the 100 page mark (out of seven) as I just got it but the writing is amazing, the world thick and interesting and I already really like the characters.  The imagery is so vivid and I'm anxious to get some more time with it.  I've heard there are two additional novels that take place in the same "world" though they're not connected and can be read independently of one another so I hope the quality continues to hold throughout as I'll certainly pick up the other two if that's the case.

Been on a bit of a Steampunk kick lately as I just finished reading The Affinity Bridge by Georgy Mann which was far more promising on the cover than it was inside.  Not an awful book but one I've certainly already forgotten and one where the writing was more or less on par with Dan Brown's work (read: horrible).  Okay, so it's not that bad but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.  For a novel that boasts a Holmes-like mystery, airships, automata, zombies, and bowler hats, he somehow managed to make it uninteresting which confuses me to no end.  The book should just write itself.  Even having nothing more than pictures would have been fine with me and I would have called it a 3 out of 5 and walked away happy.

Ah well.  At least what I'm reading now will wash the bitter taste away.  I hope.

Enjoy your Monday.
